You can even pair other Bluetooth devices, like headphones, directly without using its mic – perfect when you don’t want to mute your Echo!
Echo can also serve as the hub of your smart home, connecting all sorts of devices – from lights and switches to thermostats and fans – that support Zigbee (a wireless protocol designed for smart homes) with each other and voice-control them from it via Alexa app. Compatible brands include Nest, Philips Hue, WeMo, and SmartThings Netatmo Hive.
Be mindful that Echo records every word spoken after hearing the wake word, prompting some users to fear that it’s listening in on them. There is an option available via Amazon to enable review of commands and history if this makes you uneasy; access this data online to ensure Amazon isn’t listening in on conversations. You may also wish to disable Amazon Sidewalk which shares Echo’s internet connection with nearby devices in emergencies or troubleshooting situations.

You can use the app on any mobile device to easily control this smart plug from anywhere, and it integrates with Alexa and Google Assistant so you can turn devices on or off with voice control. Unfortunately, there’s no temperature sensor or IFTTT integration included – however, it works great once set up!
As opposed to many of the smart plugs on this list, this smart plug doesn’t require a hub and connects directly to your router via Wi-Fi instead. That makes it more affordable without subscription fees – although you might miss out on some advanced features that more advanced models offer such as scheduling or monitoring energy consumption.
Hubitat Elevation
Hubitat Elevation is a smart home hub with a unique twist. Instead of depending on an internet connection for operation, this device relies on local networking instead, backing up settings and automation routines should there be any power outage or other issue – making it more reliable in remote areas and supporting an extensive variety of smart devices such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Lutron ClearConnect LAN WiFi networks.

It has an extensive list of compatible smart home gadgets and can even be tailored specifically to each user.
The Elevation may require a larger upfront investment than some smart home systems, but its potential rewards are considerable. Local processing and custom automation provide a true smart home experience without depending on unreliable internet or cloud services that could suddenly go offline at any moment. Plus it supports digital assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant while supporting various protocols including Zigbee, Z-Wave, IR, and LAN!
